Who is at risk for breast cancer?

Everyone is at risk for breast cancer. The two most important risk factors are being female and getting older. Most women diagnosed with breast cancer have no other known factors.

What can I do to reduce my risk of getting breast cancer?

There is no sure way to avoid breast cancer. But, you can do things that may improve your overall health. Maintain a healthy weight. Exercise and eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

My mother had breast cancer a few years ago. Does that mean that I will get breast cancer too?

We don’t know what causes breast cancer. But, most women who get breast cancer have no family history of the disease. If someone in your family has had breast cancer or you are concerned about your risk, talk to your doctor. Learn about your choices and ask when to start getting mammograms.

I am currently taking birth control pills. Do birth control pills increase my chance of developing breast cancer?

If you are currently taking birth control pills, your breast cancer risk is slightly increased. The increased risk from using birth control pills becomes less after you have stopped using them. After about 10 years your risk returns to normal.

Does drinking alcohol increase my chance of breast cancer?

Studies have shown that drinking alcohol can increase your risk for breast cancer.

My breasts feel lumpy and tender at certain times of the month. Does this increase my chance for breast cancer?

Breast lumpiness with tenderness or pain at certain times of the month is called fibrocystic breast changes. These breast changes are common, especially before your period, and do not increase your chance of getting breast cancer. Get to know the way your breasts look and feel. Learn what is normal for you. If you notice any change, see your doctor right away.

Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.

That promise is now Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the global leader of the globalbreast cancer movement, having invested more than $1.9 billion since our inception in 1982. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breastcancer survivors and activists, we’re working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, and generous contributions from our partners, sponsors and fellow supporters, we have become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

ADRA

August 2011 Charity of the Month

The worst drought in 60 years is causing a severe food crisis affecting 12 million people, more than half of which are children, in the Horn of Africa.

Food prices are sky-high leaving parents unable to feed their children. Wells have gone dry. Herds are dying from lack of grazing and water. Crops are non-existent from lack of rain. There is very little hope that this food and water crisis will let up until 2012. More than a quarter of the children in the hardest-hit parts of Kenya are severely malnourished. ADRA is providing food rations to households, with a special ration reserved for pregnant and lactating mothers, and an additional ration for malnourished children. ADRA is drilling four boreholes in various communities and making water readily available through water trucking.

In Uganda, hundreds of thousands of people are reported to be in danger of severe starvation and living with a dangerously low supply of water. ADRA is addressing the serious deficiency of nutritional intake by providing food, water and emergency non-food items to 55,000 beneficiaries in northeastern region of Karamoja.

In Somalia, where ongoing civil war has displaced entire villages, ADRA is providing high-risk areas with clean drinking water through an emergency water trucking response. We are repairing boreholes and rehabilitating water points in strategic locations, maximizing the number of individuals who can benefit from its repair. To protect against the spread of diseases amongst internally displaced persons camps (IDPs), ADRA is constructing latrines. A provision of non-food items such as plastic sheets for shelter, sleeping mats, blankets, mosquito nets, water containers, utensils and chlorine tablets are being distributed in the camps.

The Western Somali region in Ethiopia has experienced very low rainfall, a devastating setback to the pastoral communities who rely entirely on their livestock for their livelihood. Along with an emergency water trucking response and distribution of essential non-food items, ADRA will be providing livestock feed and veterinary assistance to protect the assets of the farming communities. Through this intervention, ADRA is helping secure the livelihoods of thousands who are dependent upon their highly valuable livestock.

Restore A Child

November 2011 Charity of the Month

Help Contribute to A Community Outreach Program

Restore A Child’s Community Outreach Programs reflect compassion beyond words.  2011 has ushered new opportunities for greater service in the field of food security through our agricultural programs to reduce hunger.  According to UNICEF, one in every six of the world’s population is hungry. We build homes to protect children, we build schools and ensure a good quality education for those that would otherwise go without. Restore A Child digs wells to allow free access to clean drinking water for entire communities.  We also fund the construction of clinics and provide medical care to combat disease. It is because of YOU, our donor, that Restore A Child can continue to grow and serve thousands more with a tangible expression of love.

The current economic climate is unfavorable and as a result we face many challenges. However, we cannot allow this to undermine the commitment that we made 10 years ago, in 1999.  Each child deserves a fresh start– just think of what a difference your donation will do to offer even ONE child a new fresh start!
